The area was initially populated by Cornish miners, whereas Greenstone hill remained farmlands until it was developed.

Greenstone hill is approximately 9-11km from OR Tambo international airport via the R24 or Electron Avenue, 9.8km from the Marlboro Gautrain station via the N3 Eastern Bypass and 5 minutes from the future Modderfontein Gautrain Station.

Any goods or services can be attained from the multitude of Retail centres in the area, the biggest and most popular being Greenstone mall and Stoneridge Shopping Centre, with the smaller centres being Green Valley Shopping Centre, Stonehill Crossing and Eden Meadows.
